A fireworks warehouse in a field in Esparto, Yolo County, exploded on the afternoon of July 1, resulting in the complete destruction of the warehouse, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) reported on 2/7.
The explosion sent fireworks scattering across nearly 82 acres of surrounding farmland and fields, igniting multiple fires.
The warehouse owner, who is fully licensed, has been cooperating with rescue teams and drones to locate the 7 missing people.
Authorities have not yet determined whether the missing individuals were warehouse employees or residents from the surrounding area. Evacuation orders remain in place despite the fires being contained.
"The fire needs time to cool down before explosive experts can safely access the area to assess the situation and ensure safety," the Yolo County Sheriff's Department said. "We urge residents to continue avoiding the area for the next few days."

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, with a focus on whether warehouse operations were compliant with state and federal regulations.
"Such incidents are rare, as these facilities must adhere to strict California fireworks regulations and federal explosive storage guidelines," local authorities stated.
