The Netherlands announced on 5/8 that it would purchase USD 577 million worth of arms from US stockpiles to aid Ukraine. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden jointly announced on the same day a contribution of USD 500 million for the same purpose.
This marks the first instance of nations procuring arms from US reserves through the Ukraine Priority Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism initiated by President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte last month.
The four European countries emphasized the need to support Ukraine amid mounting military pressure from Russia. According to Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans, this aid will "increase pressure on Russia to negotiate."

The Dutch military aid package comprises components for US Patriot missiles and other systems for Ukrainian units stretched thin on the front lines, the Dutch Ministry of Defense stated.
The Swedish government announced its support would include air defense systems, including Patriot missile ammunition, anti-tank weapons, other munitions, and spare parts for Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the aid as "a very powerful initiative that will significantly enhance our ability to protect lives." "These are fundamental new steps for long-term security in Europe," Zelensky said.
Zelensky also mentioned discussing bilateral defense cooperation and sanctions against Russia with President Trump on 5/8, but didn't elaborate.
The NATO secretary general confirmed the Netherlands as the first nation to announce its aid plan under the PURL and welcomed the similar move by Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
"Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have supported Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict with Russia," Rutte said. "I commend these allies for their swift action in putting this initiative into practice."
