Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard also conducted exercises in the Strait of Hormuz on 16/2. This action was seen as a message to challenge US forces in the region. Previously, US President Donald Trump deployed what he described as a "mighty fleet" near Iran to increase pressure on the country.
These military exercises take place amid the second round of Oman-mediated negotiations between Tehran and Washington. The talks were held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17/2. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reported that both sides reached a "set of guiding principles" for negotiating and drafting an agreement with the United States.
