Kharg Island, a small landmass of 20 square kilometers in the Persian Gulf, stands as Iran's largest oil export center and a critical economic lifeline. Located 25 kilometers off the Iranian coast and over 480 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz, its facilities can process 7 million barrels of oil daily, handling approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports. This strategic importance makes it a focal point in the ongoing tensions with the United States.
Due to Kharg's strategic role, United States President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested the possibility of seizing the island during conflicts with Iran, most recently on 11/6. Such control would allow the US to cripple Iran's economy, potentially forcing Tehran to make concessions in negotiations. However, this scenario carries significant risks for Washington.
The United States previously launched two airstrikes on Kharg Island in mid-March and on 7/4, preceding a ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.
