Israel launches offensive on Gaza City

The Israeli military has announced the start of an offensive on Gaza City, the largest city in the Gaza Strip, designating it a "dangerous combat zone".

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced today, "We have commenced preliminary operations and the initial phase of the offensive targeting Gaza City. Israeli units are heavily engaged in combat in the city's outskirts".

The IDF declared Gaza City a "dangerous combat zone," stating that the localized ceasefire will no longer apply to the area. Israeli forces had previously suspended military operations in some areas of the Gaza Strip each afternoon to facilitate humanitarian aid deliveries.

"We will intensify our attacks and will not hesitate until all hostages are rescued, and Hamas is militarily and administratively dismantled," the IDF stated.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office announced the discovery of two hostage bodies in the Gaza Strip. One was identified as Ilan Weiss, while the other remains unidentified. The bodies are currently undergoing forensic examination.

Gaza City is the largest city in the Gaza Strip. The United Nations estimates that over one million people live in the Gaza governorate, which encompasses Gaza City and its surrounding northern areas.

Israel has previously described Gaza City as a "Hamas stronghold". Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened last week to destroy the city if the militant group didn't agree to end hostilities on Tel Aviv's terms.

AFP reported that Palestinians are evacuating southward, carrying belongings such as mattresses, chairs, and bags.

"We don't want to leave our homes. We are exhausted, pushed north and south without any support. Death is approaching, and we are walking without knowing if we will die on the road or reach safety," said 42-year-old Mohammed Abu Qamar.

Israel's operation risks widespread displacement and has drawn strong international criticism. Many countries fear the operation will exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the already devastated Gaza Strip.

Last week, the United Nations declared a famine in the Gaza governorate, accusing Israel of "systematically obstructing" humanitarian relief efforts.

While the Israeli military has not issued an immediate evacuation order for Gaza City residents, an IDF spokesperson previously stated that evacuation is "inevitable". COGAT, the Israeli Ministry of Defense unit responsible for civilian affairs in Palestinian territories, announced on 28/8 that it was making preparations to "relocate residents southward for their safety".

In October 2023, Hamas launched a coordinated attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages to the Gaza Strip. Israel's retaliatory operation in the territory has resulted in nearly 63,000 deaths, according to local health officials.
