The Israeli military announced that tents and shelter materials will be transferred through the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Gaza Strip starting today. The United Nations and international aid organizations will manage the operation, overseen by Israeli defense ministry officials.
This follows Israel's declaration of relocating Gaza City residents in preparation for a new offensive to gain control of the city. Gaza City is the largest urban area in the Gaza Strip and has been described by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu as "Hamas's last stronghold".
Residents will be evacuated from conflict zones to southern Gaza Strip for their own safety, according to the Israeli military.

A spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs expressed concern about the evacuation plan to southern Gaza. On 14/8, the UN warned of serious consequences if Israel proceeds with plans to occupy Gaza City.
Palestinian and UN officials maintain that nowhere in the Gaza Strip is safe, including the southern areas.
However, the UN welcomes Israel's acknowledgment of the urgent need for shelter and its permission to bring tents and supplies into Gaza. "The UN and its partners will seize this opportunity," the spokesperson said.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas, condemned the Israeli military's plan to seize control of Gaza City as "a violation of international conventions".

The Gaza conflict began in 10/2023 after Israel launched an operation in response to Hamas's attack and to rescue hostages. Hamas had attacked southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage.
Currently, 49 hostages remain held in Gaza, including 27 believed to be dead by the Israeli military. The conflict has resulted in over 61,500 deaths, according to Hamas-controlled health authorities.
