LGBT+ advocacy groups in the US report a surge in inquiries about relocating to Canada since Donald Trump's presidency, the Guardian reported on 7/9/2025.
Observers note a growing trend of criticism targeting the LGBT+ community in the US, with several executive orders concerning transgender individuals and over 600 bills impacting the community's rights.
In the first eight months of the year, the charity Rainbow Railroad received 4,197 calls, mostly from Americans seeking assistance to emigrate, a 760% increase compared to the same period last year.

This trend is likely to continue. "A significant number of LGBT+ individuals are afraid of what might happen to them, given the new political and legal landscape for the community," said Latoya Nugent, a member of Rainbow Railroad.
Since taking office earlier in the year, Trump has introduced several LGBT+ related policies. He declared that the US recognizes only two genders, signed an executive order barring transgender people from the military, and banned gender transition for those under 19. Over 10 US states have also banned displaying the LGBT+ flag on government buildings and schools.
