A video recorded by a witness and released on the afternoon of 14/12 shows a man in a white shirt crouching and moving between two cars to approach a shooting suspect at Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia.
As the suspect fired, the man immediately lunged forward, grappling the shooter's wrist. The two struggled before the man managed to wrench the weapon from the suspect's hand and push the shooter to the ground. He immediately pointed the gun at the suspect but did not fire, only threatening him.
The shooter moved towards an accomplice, who was standing on a bridge and engaging in a shootout with police.
The man did not pursue, instead signaling to police that he was not a threat. He then intentionally placed the gun against a tree and continued to take cover.
The identity and condition of the man have not yet been released. Australian media lauded his courageous actions, calling him a hero and asserting that his effort to disarm the shooter saved many lives, especially while the two suspects were not yet under police control.
New South Wales police stated that one suspect was shot dead at the scene, while the other was injured and is in critical condition.
At least 9 victims died in the shooting at Bondi beach. 29 people, including two police officers, were taken to hospitals in Sydney; some are in critical condition.
Australian authorities called the shooting a "terrorist attack." The area remains under lockdown, and police are investigating whether the shooters had any accomplices still at large. Australian media reported that police are verifying and neutralizing a device suspected to be a homemade bomb at the scene.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as "shocking and heartbreaking," adding that rescue forces were on site and working to save lives. He urged residents to follow police instructions. Local authorities also requested everyone to stay away from the scene.
Bondi is one of the world's renowned beaches, attracting a large number of locals and tourists, especially on warm weekend evenings.
According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, incidents are classified as mass shootings when at least 4 people die, excluding the suspect. Shootings are rare in Australia due to strict gun control regulations. The Bondi beach shooting is the deadliest incident since the Port Arthur shooting in 4/1996.
