North Korea's Wonsan Kalma resort opens

The Wonsan Kalma resort on North Korea's east coast opened on 1/7, with a capacity of over 20,000 guests, described by state media as "world-class."

Fireworks lit up the sky at the Wonsan Kalma resort in Kangwon province on North Korea's east coast during its grand opening on 24/6.

North Korean media described it as a "world-class" coastal tourist city, "where over 400 artistically designed buildings line the white sand beach, creating a perfect combination." North Korea's population is approximately 26.5 million.

Wonsan Kalma has about 50 luxury hotels, offering approximately 7,000 rooms.

The project was launched in 2014. Kim Jong-un aims to transform the coastal city of Wonsan from a local destination into a multi-billion dollar tourist hotspot.

Resort amenities include indoor and outdoor water parks with colorful slides, a mini-golf course, a cinema, a theater, an arcade, restaurants serving local and international cuisine, a shopping center, a stadium, and other entertainment facilities.

The beach area offers swimming, sunbathing, and recreational activities.

"People from all over the country have come to the resort and are filled with joy at experiencing new levels of amenities. Visitors are amazed by the beauty and splendor of the tourist city," KCNA reported.

Development plans for Wonsan Kalma have progressed rapidly since they were first announced in 2014.

Kim Jong-un hailed the resort as one of the country's greatest achievements this year. "The Wonsan Kalma coastal tourist area should play a leading role in laying the foundation for North Korea's tourism culture," Kim said, instructing those in charge of the resort to provide the best comfort and entertainment for visitors.
