Prime minister departs for expanded BRICS summit

Prime minister Pham Minh Chinh left Hanoi this afternoon to attend the Expanded BRICS Summit and bilateral activities in Brazil.

The visit of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and a high-ranking delegation will take place from 4-8/7 at the invitation of Brazilian President Lula da Silva.

Accompanying the prime minister and his spouse are Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung; deputy ministers of National Defense, Public Security, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Development, Finance, and Science and Technology, along with other officials, according to VGP.

This is the first time Vietnam is participating in the BRICS Summit as a Partner Country, affirming Vietnam's role, aspirations, and responsible contributions within this multilateral mechanism, further deepening cooperation between Vietnam and BRICS member states.

This marks Prime Minister Chinh’s third visit to Brazil in three consecutive years. During this visit, he will engage in bilateral activities to foster multifaceted cooperation with Brazil, a crucial strategic partner and Vietnam's largest trading partner in Latin America.

BRICS is a group of emerging economies, representing over 40% of the global population and about 25% of the world's GDP. The group was formed in 2009 with four initial members: Brazil, Russia, India, and China. BRICS later admitted South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Indonesia.

In June, Vietnam became the 10th Partner Country of BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

Vietnam and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1989. The bilateral relationship has since been strengthened through numerous high-level visits between leaders of the two countries.

During President Lula da Silva's visit to Vietnam in March, the two sides issued a Joint Statement and adopted an Action Plan to implement the Strategic Partnership for the 2025-2030 period, setting the direction for bilateral relations in the coming years.
