Protests erupt across US cities after ICE agent fatally shoots woman

Protests have erupted in many US cities, condemning the fatal shooting of a woman by an immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis during an immigration sweep.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 7/1, following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman, by an agent from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Portland street. The incident, which occurred during an immigration sweep, has ignited widespread condemnation and calls for justice.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the ICE agent fired in self-defense, claiming Good "attempted to ram federal officers" and engaged in a "terrorist act." However, Minnesota state officials expressed skepticism after video of the incident circulated. The footage shows agents blocking Good's vehicle. As Good attempted to drive away, an agent in front of her car drew a weapon and fired multiple shots at the driver at close range, killing her instantly.

Social media videos captured hundreds of protestors marching through the streets of Minneapolis, throwing snow, and forcing ICE agents to retreat from gathering points. Some protestors chanted slogans demanding the arrest of the ICE agent responsible for Good's death. Local residents also organized a memorial service for her.

The video of the shooting sent shockwaves through public opinion in other US cities. In California, crowds gathered outside the ICE building in downtown San Francisco, holding banners and chanting slogans in protest. "This is a terrible crime", an Oakland man stated.

Protests also occurred in Massachusetts, where demonstrators gathered at Boston Common, the oldest park in Boston. They expressed shock and outrage, with some noting that the shooting evoked memories of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis nearly 6 years ago. Massachusetts officials anticipate more protests across the state in the coming days.

In Florida, crowds assembled in downtown Miami, calling for accountability and justice. Protestor Martin Vidal remarked, "It's a natural human reaction when someone is murdered."

Major cities including Portland, Oregon; Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chicago; New York; Seattle; and Washington also reported protests against the shooting.

This incident marks a serious escalation in the series of immigration sweeps conducted in major cities during President Donald Trump's administration. According to AP, Good is the 5th person to die in connection with federal immigration operations.
