Russia 'defined clear stance' before Trump-Putin meeting

Russia's foreign minister says the country has defined a clear stance for the summit between President Putin and his counterpart, Trump.

"We are not predicting anything. We know we have clear, specifically defined arguments and positions. We will present them," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the media today.

Lavrov and the Russian delegation arrived in Anchorage, Alaska, the location of the summit between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

The Russian foreign minister added that Moscow and Washington "have accomplished a lot" during the visits of US special envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia. Since Trump returned to the White House in January, Witkoff has traveled to Russia 5 times to discuss the situation with Putin, including a three-hour meeting last weekend.

"Witkoff acted on behalf of President Trump. We hope that both sides will continue this very useful dialogue," Lavrov said.

The Trump-Putin summit is scheduled to begin at 11:30 on 15/8 (2:30 Hanoi time on 16/8) at a facility at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. This will be the first meeting between the US and Russian leaders since 6/2021. The two leaders will meet one-on-one, with only interpreters present.

The US president pledged not to sign any agreements with Russia independently and will allow Ukraine to participate in any decisions regarding its fate. Trump also estimated a 25% chance of the summit's failure.
