Russia launches over 600 missiles and drones at Ukraine, killing 10 in Kyiv

Russia launched over 600 missiles and drones into Ukraine, hitting 13 locations and killing 10 people, injuring 38 in Kyiv.

Emergency responders worked to clear debris from a residential building in Kyiv after a Russian attack. “This is yet another large-scale attack on our cities and communities. Again, there are casualties. At least eight people were killed, one of them a child," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on X (formerly Twitter) on 28/8, accusing Russia of choosing "ballistic missiles instead of negotiations".

The Ukrainian Air Force Command said Russian forces launched 598 suicide and decoy drones, two Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, nine Iskander-M tactical ballistic missiles, and 20 Kh-101 cruise missiles during the attack.

Kyiv officials later said the death toll in the city had risen to 10, with at least 38 injured. Emergency responders were conducting rescue and relief efforts, attempting to extinguish fires and search within the rubble of destroyed buildings.

"Unfortunately, Russia continues to attack in this manner. Coordinated strikes from multiple directions systematically target residential buildings," said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration.

He added that emergency responders were dealing with the aftermath at at least 20 locations in the capital.

European Council President Antonio Costa said the Russian attack damaged the EU diplomatic mission building in Kyiv. "My thoughts are with the Ukrainian victims and the staff of the European Union (EU) delegation. Their building was damaged in Russia’s deliberate attack. The EU will not be intimidated. Russia's aggression will only strengthen our resolve to stand with Ukraine and its people," he wrote on X.

Ukrainian air defenses reported shooting down or jamming 563 drones, one Kinzhal missile, seven Iskander missiles, and 18 Kh-101 missiles. The remaining weapons hit 13 locations, and debris from downed drones fell on 26 areas.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the reports, but has repeatedly stated that Moscow does not target civilians, only military infrastructure or military-related targets.

The Russian military also said Ukraine carried out drone attacks overnight. Russian air defenses intercepted or destroyed 102 Ukrainian drones in the skies over seven regions, but the Russian Defense Ministry did not specify any related damage.

The Ukrainian Drone Systems Force claimed to have attacked the Afipsky and Kuybyshevskyi oil refineries in Russia. Images posted on X showed a large fire purportedly at these facilities.

Russia and Ukraine have continued to attack each other's territories daily, despite efforts by former US President Donald Trump to promote a ceasefire.

In the early stages of the conflict, Kyiv was relatively well-protected from Russian attacks. However, the city has suffered casualties in recent months as Russia has launched large numbers of missiles and drones.

Last month, Kyiv suffered one of its deadliest attacks since the start of the war, with over 30 people killed, including five children.
