The accident occurred on 10/9 on a major route connecting Mexico City to Puebla. Security camera footage shows gas escaping from the tanker, forming a cloud that covered the highway before igniting and causing a large explosion.
The explosion incinerated 18 cars, killing at least three people and injuring 70, 19 of whom are in critical condition. Witnesses reported seeing people with severe burns all over their bodies, with some lying on the road awaiting ambulances.
Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada called the incident a "state of emergency" that caused serious casualties. She was at the scene with firefighters and medical personnel.
Mexico City officials are investigating the cause of the explosion. Cesar Cravioto, a city official, said the fire was fully contained later that evening, and the highway reopened after hours of closure.
