The Mexico City Health Agency reported on 1/7 that an incident occurred on Hamburgo and Lancaster streets, near the Angel of Independence monument. Thousands of soccer fans had gathered there to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador in the round of 16.
The Mexico City Health Agency confirmed that a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman died from suffocation.

Clara Brugada Molina, a Mexico City leader, announced on X on the same day that a 48-year-old woman was also found unconscious from suffocation on the evening of 30/6. Medical experts later declared her deceased.
"We are in contact with the victims' families to provide all necessary support. From the bottom of my heart, I extend my deepest condolences to their families. We reiterate our call to always organize celebrations responsibly, ensuring safety for yourselves and those around you", Molina stated.
Last week, another World Cup victory celebration for the Mexico team turned violent when a vehicle drove into a crowd of fans at the popular resort of Cabo San Lucas, injuring over a dozen people.
Mexico, as a co-host, became the second team to secure a spot in the round of 16 after defeating Ecuador at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. This victory ended a 40-year wait for a win in the World Cup knock-out stage, sparking passionate celebrations at Estadio Azteca and throughout the capital all night.
