Republican Representative Elise Stefanik announced on X on 19/12 that she would end her campaign for New York governor and not seek re-election to Congress. "While spending time with my family this Christmas season, our family carefully considered this decision," she wrote.
Stefanik, 41, stated she "would win overwhelmingly" if she continued the race, but spending the first half of 2026 on Republican primary elections was not an effective use of time and resources.
Stefanik added that her most important role throughout her time in Congress remained that of a mother. She expressed that she "would feel immense regret if she did not focus more on her young son's safety, growth, and happiness."
"Elise is an exceptional talent, no matter what path she chooses. She will achieve brilliant success. I am always by her side," US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Stefanik was elected to the House in 2014 at 30, becoming the youngest female representative at the time. She is one of seven Republican representatives from New York; the state's other 19 representatives are Democrats.
Stefanik initially held moderate views but later became an ally of President Trump. She defended him during his first impeachment in 2019. In January, Trump nominated Stefanik as US ambassador to the United Nations, but later withdrew the nomination to maintain the Republican Party's narrow majority in the House.
On 7/11, Stefanik announced her candidacy for New York governor, challenging incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul. Her bid was quickly overshadowed when Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, also a Trump ally, joined the race. Nassau is considered a key Republican stronghold in New York.
President Trump had previously expressed concern about choosing between the two allies in the gubernatorial election, scheduled for 11/2026.
"They are both great people. I don't like two very close friends of mine running together. I just hope not too much damage occurs," Trump told reporters.
