Former US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on 31/7, describing India and Russia as "failing economies" and expressing indifference to their interactions. "Tell Medvedev to watch his words. He's venturing into very dangerous territory," Trump concluded, referring to the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev.
Medvedev, a former Russian president, recently dismissed Trump's ultimatum about imposing a 100% tariff if Russia doesn't resolve the conflict in Ukraine within 50 days, later shortened to 10. Medvedev suggested that Trump is misguided and warned that this approach could lead to war.
"If a few words from a former Russian president can cause such a nervous reaction from the former US president, then we are moving in the right direction and will continue on this path," Medvedev wrote on Telegram today. He also reminded Trump to "remember the perilous 'Dead Hand' system."
"Dead Hand" is the Western term for Perimeter, the Soviet Union's Cold War-era nuclear deterrent system. This semi-automatic command and control system was designed to ensure automatic retaliation with nuclear weapons if the entire Soviet leadership were eliminated in a first strike.

Medvedev is a close ally of President Vladimir Putin. He has made numerous hardline statements targeting Kyiv and Western countries since the conflict in Ukraine began in 3/2022.
Russia and Ukraine recently resumed peace talks, but haven't reached any agreements on ceasefire terms or the possibility of a direct meeting between their leaders.
The Kremlin stated Russia's commitment to peace, but affirmed that the operation in Ukraine is ongoing. Russia also noted that efforts to restore relations with the US have slowed following Trump's comments.
