At a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on 18/9, US President Donald Trump said his failure to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict was his "biggest disappointment."
Trump had previously suggested he could easily resolve the conflict due to his personal relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "He really disappointed me," Trump said.

Despite this setback, Trump expressed optimism that Moscow and Kyiv would find a way to end the conflict. He said "good news will come soon" but didn't elaborate. The US president also urged European countries to stop buying Russian oil, arguing that lower oil prices would force Putin to abandon the campaign in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Starmer said he discussed with Trump ways to increase pressure on Putin. "We must intensify the pressure on Putin. Only when the US president does that will he truly intend to act," Starmer said.
The British leader is attempting to act as a bridge between Trump and European allies, particularly regarding Ukraine, to encourage more commitments from Washington to Kyiv. However, Starmer has been cautious, avoiding direct pressure on Trump.
During the same press conference on 18/9, Trump said that "one of the few disagreements between the two sides" was Britain's plan to recognize a Palestinian state.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has intensified his mediation efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The US president held a summit with his Russian counterpart on 15/8 in Alaska and then met with European leaders and President Zelensky at the White House on 18/8.

However, his efforts have yet to yield concrete results. On 13/9, Trump announced he would sanction Russia if NATO member states followed suit and stopped buying Russian oil.
In July, Starmer announced that Britain planned to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly session in September unless Israel met certain conditions, including reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The US firmly rejects this idea, despite France, Canada, and other allies also planning to recognize a Palestinian state.
