Former US President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania attended the FIFA Club World Cup final between English club Chelsea and French club PSG at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 13/7.
Trump received a mixed reception at the stadium, with cheers and some jeers. The former first couple and FIFA President Gianni Infantino watched the match from the VIP area.
Security was noticeably tighter than at previous matches, with snipers and secret service agents positioned around the stadium.
Chelsea won the match 3-0, securing the world club championship. Trump presented the Best Young Player award to PSG's Desire Doue, the Golden Glove to Chelsea's Robert Sanchez, and the Golden Ball to Chelsea's Cole Palmer.
Trump and Infantino then presented medals to the players and the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James. Infantino left the field, allowing the champions their celebratory moment, a common practice in football.
However, Trump remained on the field. Infantino returned and guided Trump behind the players.
Social media users pointed out that Cole Palmer appeared to ask James why Trump was still on the stage. In another video, James seemingly asked Trump, "Are you leaving?"
Trump reportedly replied, "No, I'm celebrating with you guys."
The former president's actions sparked mixed reactions online. "Who invited Trump to stay? Does he think he's part of the team?", one user commented on X.
Another commented, "It's annoying to see an unrelated person spoil the players' dream moment."
Others were impressed that Trump celebrated with the Chelsea players.
One X user commented, "Trump is having the time of his life at the FIFA Club World Cup."
Another noted, "Trump almost jumped up to celebrate with the players."

Members of Trump's cabinet, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, also attended the match. The FIFA Club World Cup trophy had been displayed in the Oval Office since Infantino presented it to Trump earlier in the year.
The US, Canada, and Mexico will co-host the World Cup next year. In May, Trump appointed Andrew Giuliani to lead the White House task force for the 2026 World Cup, aiming to ensure a smooth and safe experience for fans visiting North America.
"This team will help plan the biggest, safest, and most extraordinary football tournament in history," Trump stated at a meeting with Vice President JD Vance and Infantino.
