Speaking before the UN General Assembly in New York on 23/9/2024, former President Donald Trump noted that the US would celebrate its 250th anniversary the following year. "We will also be proud to host the 2026 World Cup, and shortly thereafter, the 2028 Olympics," Trump said.
"It will be very exciting. I hope everyone comes. I hope countless fans from all over the world will visit," he stated.

Within 24 hours of pre-sale tickets opening, FIFA recorded over 1.5 million registrations from fans in 210 countries for World Cup tickets. The 2026 World Cup will be held in 16 cities across Mexico, Canada, and the US, with 48 teams competing in 104 matches.
However, a trip to the US can be expensive and complicated for many fans. Visitors from countries not eligible for visa waivers must pay an additional 250 USD "assurance fee" on top of existing fees. Wait times are also extensive. According to the US Department of State, it takes an average of 169 days for these visitors to secure an interview for a B-1/B-2 tourist or business visa.

This poses a significant challenge for large fan bases from countries like Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil, which typically send substantial numbers of supporters to cheer on their national teams at World Cup host countries.
According to FIFA, demand for 2026 World Cup tickets has primarily come from residents of the three host nations, followed by Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil.
The 2028 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles, California, in 7/2028.
