Ukrainians cautious about Trump's 'paper tiger' comment

Ukrainians express reservations about Trump's assertion that Moscow is a "paper tiger" and that Ukraine can reclaim all its territory from Russia.

On 24/9, Olha Voronina, a 66-year-old Kyiv resident, expressed her desire for former US President Donald Trump to maintain a consistent stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. This follows Trump's shifting viewpoints on Kyiv's ability to regain all of its territory from Russia.

"We need support from America, from Donald Trump. We hope that in the future, America and Mr. Trump will maintain their viewpoint and attitude towards the people and country of Ukraine, as well as the war in Ukraine," she said.

Trump previously suggested that Kyiv should cede territory in exchange for a peace agreement after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August. However, he surprised many by changing his stance just over a month later, suggesting that Ukraine could reclaim all its territory with the help of NATO. He added that the US could continue selling weapons to NATO to support Ukraine, claiming that Russia's economy is struggling and that Russia is essentially a "paper tiger".

Volodymyr Cheslavskyi, a 48-year-old Ukrainian soldier undergoing treatment in Kyiv, believes Trump isn't genuinely interested in helping Ukraine. He feels Trump keeps everyone guessing about his true intentions through contradictory statements.

"He says different things each time, sometimes supporting Ukraine, sometimes not," Cheslavskyi said.

Anna Khudimova, 43, believes the Ukrainian armed forces can win despite being outnumbered by Russia, but "cannot do it without help from Europe". "If Mr. Trump exerts influence, perhaps this will become a reality," she said.

Oleksandr Merezhko, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the Ukrainian parliament, stated, "what's important to us is, beyond words, whether Mr. Trump will fulfill his commitment to impose tough sanctions on Russia".

Earlier this year, the US and Ukraine signed an agreement allowing Washington to mine minerals in Ukraine. A Ukrainian delegation will visit Washington next week to discuss a joint venture for weapons production, according to Ukrainian Ambassador to the US, Olha Stefanishyna.

She stated that the agreement focuses on the production of unmanned aerial vehicles, a field where Ukraine is leading in applying new production technologies, proven on the battlefield. This agreement was discussed in "considerable detail" by the leaders of the two countries on 23/9.

Max Bergmann, Director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), commented that Trump's post suggests the US wants to "wash its hands" and transfer the responsibility of supporting Ukraine to Europe.

"I feel that's the President's way of declaring withdrawal, along the lines of: 'We will continue to do some things, but basically this is your problem'," Bergmann said on the sidelines of a defense conference in Tallinn, Estonia.

Reporting on Trump's post, Russian state television channels claimed that the US is shifting the burden of resolving the conflict to Europe and encouraging the continent to buy more American weapons.

Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesperson, refuted Trump's claim that Russia's economy is struggling and Russia is just a "paper tiger." He asserted that the Russian economy is still growing strongly despite difficulties and that Russia is actually "a bear".

"We are fighting to ensure Russia's security and interests, while also eliminating the root cause of the conflict, related to previous American administrations and Europe ignoring Russia's concerns," he said.
