Defense contractor RTX announced on 16/9/2024 that it partnered with the US Air Force to conduct a series of tests in Florida during the fall of 2024. An F-22 Raptor stealth fighter launched an AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile, achieving a record range.
"The tests demonstrated an extended flight time for the AMRAAM, significantly increasing the lethality of fifth-generation aircraft," the announcement stated.
RTX did not disclose the exact range achieved during the test. However, they confirmed the missile used was an upgraded AMRAAM variant under the F3R program, focusing on the AIM-120C-8 and AIM-120D-3, the two most advanced AMRAAM versions.

"The original AIM-120 first downed a target in 1992, but this test shows the AMRAAM platform still has significant potential for range extension, even with newer, more advanced designs emerging," commented Thomas Newdick of the US military publication War Zone.
According to Newdick, the test also highlights the US Air Force's commitment to modernizing the F-22. The Air Force has continuously upgraded the F-22 to maintain its effectiveness for years to come, potentially into the 2040s.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is an active radar-guided missile, effective in various weather conditions. Its active radar homing allows for "fire-and-forget" capability, enabling the launching aircraft to disengage after firing and avoid potential counterattacks.

The original AIM-120A has a range of 50 km, while the AIM-120C-8, sold to US allies, can hit targets up to 180 km away. The AIM-120D-3 is believed to have an even greater range and improved electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) compared to the AIM-120C-8.
The US is currently developing the AIM-260, the successor to the AIM-120, intended for both the Air Force and Navy. While its exact specifications are classified, it will reportedly boast a significantly longer range than the AIM-120 while sharing a similar overall design.
