Vietnam poised to bridge Arab League and ASEAN relations

President Luong Cuong met with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirming Vietnam's readiness to connect the organization with ASEAN.

During a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Cairo, Egypt on 4/8, President Luong Cuong commended the League's role and contributions to maintaining peace, stability, and development in the Middle East, Africa, and globally, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The President affirmed Vietnam's desire to further develop robust and effective relations with the Arab League and all its members, many of which are traditional friends and important economic partners of Vietnam.

President Luong Cuong proposed that Vietnam and the Arab League member states enhance political and diplomatic ties, strengthen bonds and trust, increase consultations, and collaborate closely while supporting each other in multilateral mechanisms, especially at the United Nations (UN) and the Non-Aligned Movement.

Agreeing with Mr. Gheit's proposal to promote cooperation between the Arab League and ASEAN, the President confirmed Vietnam's willingness to serve as a bridge between the two organizations.

Secretary-General Gheit shared that since the 1950s, the people of Egypt and Arab countries have followed Vietnam's struggle for national independence, considering it a model for Egypt and other Arab nations in their own national struggles.

He affirmed that the Arab League and its member states value comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam and expressed gratitude for Vietnam's balanced perspective, aligned with international law and the UN Charter, on international issues, including supporting the just cause of the Palestinian people.

Secretary-General Gheit affirmed that he would make every effort to promote relations between Vietnam and the League and deepen ties between Vietnam and its 22 member states.

President Luong Cuong and his spouse are on a state visit to Egypt from 3-6/8, at the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and his spouse. This is the first state visit by a Vietnamese President to Egypt in seven years.
