Vietnam seeks US support to become a regional high-tech hub

Vice chairman of the national assembly Tran Quang Phuong requested US support for Vietnam to become a regional high-tech hub, focusing on technology transfer and cooperation.

During a meeting with US ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Quang Phuong reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to the comprehensive strategic partnership with the US. He expressed gratitude for US support of a "strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous" Vietnam, according to the ministry of foreign affairs.

Phuong welcomed the positive outcomes of bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including politics and diplomacy, economics, trade and investment, education and training, and war legacy remediation.

He emphasized Vietnam's determination to build an independent, self-reliant, and deeply integrated economy. Science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation are key breakthroughs and primary drivers for developing modern productive forces, he said.

Phuong asked Ambassador Knapper and the US embassy to enhance connectivity, promote cooperation and technology transfer, and support Vietnam in becoming a regional high-tech hub and a crucial link in the global semiconductor supply chain. He also urged the US to recognize Vietnam's market economy status and remove Vietnam from the D1 and D3 strategic export control lists.

The vice chairman highlighted the parliamentary cooperation between Vietnam and the US as a bright spot in the bilateral relationship. This cooperation has made significant contributions, from the period of post-war reconciliation and normalization of relations to the current comprehensive strategic partnership.

Regarding inter-parliamentary exchanges, Phuong confirmed the Vietnamese National Assembly's readiness to welcome US congressional delegations and expressed hope for increased exchange and learning of legislative experience between the two sides.

Ambassador Knapper affirmed the US desire for close coordination with Vietnam to effectively implement the comprehensive strategic partnership across all pillars. This includes promoting high-level contact and expanding cooperation in areas such as economics, trade and investment, education and training, defense and security, and war legacy remediation.

The ambassador emphasized the US’ continued support for Vietnam's pursuit of its socio-economic development goals.

He highlighted the Vietnamese National Assembly's critical role in implementing major long-term national development strategies. The US business community is particularly encouraged by the outcomes of the recent National Assembly session, especially regarding the digital economy and high-tech infrastructure development, he said.

Ambassador Knapper also offered condolences for the boat accident in Quang Ninh on 19/7 and affirmed the US’ readiness to assist Vietnam in disaster prevention, search and rescue, and response to extreme weather events.
