While attending the high-level general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly and engaging in bilateral activities in the US, President Luong Cuong met with US Representatives Brian Mast and Young Kim on 23/9. During the meeting, he affirmed Vietnam's consistent pursuit of an independent, self-reliant, multilateral, and diversified foreign policy. He emphasized Vietnam's role as a friend, reliable partner, and responsible member of the international community, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The president highlighted the strategic importance of the US as a partner for Vietnam, both regionally and globally. He described the Vietnam-US relationship as a prime example in international relations, demonstrating that with determination, trust, mutual respect, and shared interests, nations can overcome a painful past to build a future of cooperation and friendship.

President Luong Cuong commended the US Congress and its members for their efforts in reconciliation, trust-building, and fostering cooperation. He urged Representative Mast and the House Foreign Affairs Committee to continue their support for the bilateral relationship across all sectors.
Regarding post-war cooperation, the president expressed gratitude for the US government and Congress's support in addressing Agent Orange/dioxin contamination at Bien Hoa Airport, along with programs assisting Agent Orange victims, landmine clearance, and support for people with disabilities in Vietnam.
Representative Mast affirmed that the US views Vietnam as a key partner in Southeast Asia. As Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he pledged to actively promote parliamentary exchanges and dialogue between lawmakers of both countries, as well as initiatives to enhance economic and trade cooperation. He also committed to advocating for continued US congressional support and appropriate resources for humanitarian projects and war legacy remediation in Vietnam.
Representative Young Kim, Chair of the Indo-Pacific Subcommittee, acknowledged the bridging role of the Vietnamese-American community and welcomed the two countries' continued cooperation across all sectors, especially in economics and trade, education and training, and people-to-people exchanges.

In a meeting with Senator Chris Coons, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the president proposed increased high-level exchanges and dialogues, promoting trade and investment as a key pillar, and addressing existing differences through dialogue.
Recognizing Delaware's strengths in biotechnology, high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, and pharmaceuticals, the president encouraged Senator Coons to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries, as well as between Delaware and Vietnamese localities in these areas.
Senator Coons emphasized the US Senate's strong support for enhanced cooperation across all channels and sectors, especially in economics, trade, war legacy remediation, and education. He also praised Fulbright University Vietnam's role in promoting educational cooperation, contributing to Vietnam's efforts in developing a high-quality workforce.
During the meetings, both sides discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. The president emphasized the importance of the US continuing to value ASEAN's central role and enhancing cooperation on global issues such as climate change, maritime security, and sustainable development.
The president also urged the US to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN, promoting its central role and coordinating in multilateral forums. The US congress members emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN to ensure peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
The president's working visit from 21-24/9 took place during the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations and the second anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Bilateral trade in 2024 reached nearly 150 billion USD, a 20.5% increase compared to the previous year. The US is currently Vietnam's second-largest trading partner and one of its most important export markets.
