Fine Jewelry, a jewelry store owned by a Vietnamese American family in Milpitas, San Jose, California, was targeted by 10 to 15 robbers at 1:30 PM on 9/10. The owner and an employee were inside at the time.
Security footage shows the masked robbers wielding hammers and attempting to break into the store, located inside Seafood City Supermarket, an Asian business complex. The robbers fled after the owner fired a warning shot.
The jewelry store's glass door was damaged, but no property was stolen. Police are investigating, but no arrests have been made.
"If the owner hadn't had a gun to scare off the robbers, the situation could have been much worse," Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano said. Police confirmed the owner legally owned the firearm.
According to business information posted on Buzzfile, the store owner is Dennis Nguyen. The store has been in business for 15 years and has annual revenue of 89,612 USD.
The owner's family declined to speak to the media, but told Mayor Montano they were robbed in a similar manner about two years ago. "That robbery was devastating; all the jewelry was stolen, and the insurance company raised their rates. It's a domino effect," Montano said.
This attempted robbery occurred less than a week after a robbery at Kim Hung Jewelry in San Jose. Police have not yet made any arrests in the Kim Hung Jewelry case.
Officials and local residents say San Jose is experiencing a serious crime wave, with many incidents going unreported to the police.
"Criminals are targeting small businesses in broad daylight," the organization Asians Unite said.
Mayor Montano is urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to allocate more funding to Proposition 36, passed in November, which makes it easier for officials to prosecute theft crimes.
"The situation is out of control, we have to step in, and please do your job," Montano said.
