A robbery at the Vietnamese-owned Kim Hung Jewelry store in San Jose last weekend shocked California and angered Mayor Matt Mahan, who vowed to hold the robbers "fully accountable".
Security camera footage shows a group of masked robbers, dressed in black, smashing a car through the store's glass doors and rushing inside. Armed with hammers and axes, they smashed display cases, grabbed jewelry, and ordered everyone inside to "get down".
The 88-year-old store owner was visibly frightened as the robbers approached him. As he tried to stop them from looting and vandalizing his store, one of the robbers shoved him to the ground. Another employee, hands raised in surrender, cowered in a corner.

Ironically, a new study by financial advisory firm SmartAsset, published on 2/9, ranked San Jose as the safest city in the US, consistently placing it in the top 10 across all safety metrics considered.
The study compared the safety of the 50 largest US cities by population, evaluating data such as violent crime rates, property crime rates, traffic fatality rates, and other indicators.
Based on the adult population, San Jose had the third-lowest number of violent crimes, with 5,185 incidents. It ranked 5th for the lowest number of property crimes, with 25,715 incidents.
San Jose also had the 4th-lowest rate of drug overdose deaths, with 17 cases per 100,000 residents. The city also boasts some of the lowest rates of traffic accidents and alcohol-related incidents.
The other cities rounding out the top 5 safest cities in the US are Los Angeles, California; Fort Worth, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The San Jose Police Department is investigating the Kim Hung Jewelry robbery, and no arrests have been made yet. Police say the suspects, one of whom was armed with a gun, fled the scene in multiple vehicles.
