On 20/1, a passenger train derailed in Gelida, Catalonia, northeast Spain. The incident occurred on a suburban route near Barcelona. Adif, the Spanish railway infrastructure company, stated the retaining wall likely collapsed due to heavy rains sweeping through Catalonia this week. This area has long faced criticism for underfunded railway services and frequent incidents.
According to Inspector Claudi Gallardo of the Catalonia fire agency, all passengers were evacuated from the train after the accident.
Local officials confirmed the train driver died at the scene. Of the 37 people on board, 4 sustained serious injuries. At least 20 ambulances and 38 fire units responded to the scene.

The Catalonia fire department announced completing its search of the scene, finding no additional victims inside the train cars. Authorities are inspecting the train's undercarriage and surrounding area, while securing the scene for investigation.
This accident in Catalonia occurred just two days after a catastrophic collision between two high-speed trains in Andalusia, southern Spain. That incident resulted in at least 42 fatalities and numerous injuries, prompting Spain to observe three days of national mourning for the victims.
