"President Zelensky, you look great in that suit," said Brian Glenn of Real America's Voice, who had previously questioned Zelensky's attire during his White House visit in February. Glenn made the remark when Zelensky returned to the White House on 18/8.
President Donald Trump echoed Glenn's compliment, saying he had also praised Zelensky's appearance. Trump also reminded the Ukrainian president that Glenn "was the one who attacked you last time".
"I remember. He’s still wearing that suit. I’ve changed, but you haven’t," Zelensky quipped to the American reporter.
Earlier, upon greeting Zelensky outside, Trump had also complimented his attire. "Unbelievable, I love it," Trump said of Zelensky's dark suit.
"This is the best suit I have," the Ukrainian leader joked.
While still not wearing a tie, Zelensky chose a more formal outfit than his usual military-style clothing for this White House visit.
An anonymous European official revealed that Zelensky's clothing choice was a topic of discussion between US and Ukrainian officials before the meeting. According to the official, the Trump administration had suggested that Zelensky not wear his usual military attire.
Zelensky's clothing had drawn criticism during his February meeting with Trump. When welcoming the Ukrainian leader, Trump had sarcastically remarked, "You're so dressed up." The meeting subsequently became tense as the two leaders clashed in the Oval Office.
