The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) reported a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Battlefield Parkway (GA 2) and Dietz Road in Fort Oglethorpe on 15/1, resulting in 4 drivers being hospitalized.
GSP investigators stated that the 83-year-old female driver of a Ford Explorer mistook the accelerator for the brake before the crash. The Ford then struck a white Kia Forte, a white GMC Sierra, and a brown Honda CR-V, all stopped at a red light on Dietz Road.
The impact caused the GMC to collide with a gray Honda Civic and a pink Lexus IS300, while the Ford Explorer overturned.
A video of the incident garnered millions of views and thousands of comments, with many expressing similar sentiments.
"Elderly people should be re-tested," one commenter stated. Another agreed, saying, "I will also get old, and I agree."
One individual elaborated: "I feel families should pay a little more attention and start intervening a little more," implying a need for relatives to be cautious about allowing elderly family members to drive.
Another commenter recounted a similar accident involving an elderly person about a year prior, advocating for additional safety measures such as re-evaluating driving tests for all drivers.
On 20/1, GSP announced an arrest warrant had been issued for the female driver. She faces charges including serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, speeding 95 mph (152 km/h) in a 35 mph (56 km/h) zone, and following too closely.
