Automotive designers fear job displacement by AI

Artificial intelligence transforms rough sketches into 3D renderings in seconds, threatening traditional design roles.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the field of automotive design. While a powerful aid, this technology also presents risks. Karl Neuhold, head of exterior design for Skoda, a Volkswagen (VW) brand, admitted he was "shocked" by the capabilities of modern AI. He warned that the automotive industry might reduce its design workforce in the future as computers make the work faster and more efficient.

In an interview with Autoweek.nl, Neuhold stated that he actively integrated generative AI tools into his workflow and was astonished by their performance. `I am shocked because it is so good. I am even using it myself. Starting from a simple sketch, AI can create variations in just a few seconds with a quality that you would find hard to build better yourself,` he shared.

Anyone who has experienced online tools like Vizcom or popular artificial intelligence models such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini understands what the Skoda representative is referring to.

With just a few simple commands, the system can transform a rough hand-drawing into a perfect digital rendering, complete with realistic lighting, shadows, and environment. Previous errors regarding logos or inaccurate details have been fully resolved in recent updates.

Hand sketching still holds importance

Despite facing challenges, Skoda's design director still advises young talents to include hand sketches in their application portfolios. This traditional method of conveying shapes and ideas helps employers more accurately assess candidates' creative abilities, thereby increasing their chances of being hired. Neuhold believes that human creative thinking remains a key factor in the automotive design process, even as AI becomes more prevalent.

VW's design leadership is not the only one speaking out about the explosion of new tools in creative centers. In 2025, Gorden Wagener, former design director at Mercedes, warned that AI could lead to automotive designers being "replaced" within the next decade.

Meanwhile, General Motors has integrated AI into its current workflow. The company's specialized tools can convert hand sketches into detailed 3D renderings, combined with AI virtual wind tunnels for real-time aerodynamic evaluation. Ford also uses AI to restore and colorize black-and-white test vehicle photos from the 1960s.
