Emirates SkyCargo has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with LODD Autonomous to develop and deploy cargo drones. Badr Abbas, senior vice president of cargo at Emirates SkyCargo, and Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, finalized the agreement at the Dubai Airshow 2025.
Under the MoU, the two parties will jointly assess the feasibility of using vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft within Emirates SkyCargo's global network. This will involve feasibility studies, engagement with regulatory authorities, and demonstration flights. This initiative follows the successful first test flight of Hili, a large-payload drone developed and manufactured by LODD in Abu Dhabi. The Hili drone operates autonomously from take-off to landing, carrying a maximum payload of 250 kg and traveling up to 700 km.

Badr Abbas stated that the partnership with LODD demonstrates the company's commitment to introducing innovative solutions for customer transportation challenges. "New technology will be foundational for the next phase of the logistics industry, and Emirates SkyCargo will lead by investing experience and expertise to develop solutions that create real value," he said.
Rashid Al Manai shared that the UAE's vision focuses on innovation to enhance life. "This collaboration combines LODD's pioneering technology with the nation's long-standing commitment to developing safe, sustainable, and scalable logistics," he noted. "We will accelerate the application of drone delivery solutions, expanding reach, shortening transit times, and strengthening the UAE's position as a global logistics hub."
Emirates SkyCargo will participate in LODD's testing activities through 2027, providing data and evaluations for the design and development process as LODD aims to commercialize its product in regional and global markets. The airline is also considering using this aircraft type to support operations within its dual-hub model. While Emirates previously launched the Emirates Courier Express service for direct parcel transportation, the company did not comment on the Hili drone's potential use for this service. However, unmanned aerial vehicles are increasingly common in the final delivery stage.
Established in 1985, Emirates SkyCargo is Emirates' global cargo division. It provides diverse transportation solutions and applies modern technology to optimize logistics. LODD Autonomous is an Abu Dhabi-based technology company that develops drones and automated cargo transportation solutions, including the large-payload Hili drone.
