Maersk is in the final phase of preparations to officially launch its electric truck fleet in Vietnam from Q1/2026. The number of vehicles in the initial deployment phase was not disclosed.
These trucks will transport goods between the company's Container Freight Station (CFS) and the ports of Cat Lai, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai. Maersk is collaborating with a Vietnamese partner to establish a charging station approximately 5 km from the CFS, ensuring efficient operations.
The initiative is driven by increasing customer demand for greening supply chains and a growing interest in electric vehicles in Vietnam. "We observe growing interest in electric vehicles in Vietnam, driven by environmental awareness and technological advancements", stated Kevin Burrell, Maersk's Managing Director for the Mekong Cluster (Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar).
Burrell also noted that while electric trucks have a higher upfront cost than diesel vehicles, their energy and maintenance expenses are lower over time.

The electrification of transport vehicles is a growing trend in the logistics industry, spurred by sustainable development policies, fuel costs, and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) objectives. Road transport alone currently accounts for 12,2% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, electrification is expected to reduce emissions and optimize costs. According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, electric trucks can cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 63% per trip compared to diesel-powered trucks.
The Danish shipping giant stated that electrifying domestic transport aligns with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions across all global operations by 2040. Maersk plans to continue collaborating with partners and customers to expand the use of electric trucks. "We aim to further expand our electric truck fleet and replace all diesel-powered trucks by 2040", added Russell Pang, Maersk's Head of Logistics and Services for the Mekong Cluster.
Globally, Maersk has already deployed or is piloting electric trucks with partners in over 14 countries, including Thailand, China, Brazil, and Spain. As part of this initiative, the company will purchase Energy Attribute Certificates in the form of I-RECs – a standard for certifying the renewable origin of electricity – to offset the entire electricity consumption of its electric truck fleet.
A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) operates in over 130 countries with approximately 100,000 employees. On 18/11, Vincent Clerc, CEO of A.P. Moller - Maersk, met with General Secretary To Lam and expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities to build a large container port in Vietnam, focusing on green and low-carbon development.
