Nongfu Spring 17.5 oranges are a premium fresh orange brand developed by Chinese beverage group Nongfu Spring. The product primarily uses the Navel (Newhall navel orange) variety, known for its thin skin, juiciness, and rich sweetness.
The 17.5 oranges source from Tan Chau, Jiangxi, an area considered an "orange capital" with over a thousand years of cultivation history. This region has partnered with Nongfu Spring for over 18 years. The area's natural conditions are unique: large day-night temperature differences help oranges accumulate sugar, deep red soil retains moisture well, and high rainfall and humidity create a stable growing environment. This location once supplied tribute oranges to ancient imperial courts.
Nongfu Spring applies a strict quality control process for its 17.5 oranges, differing from traditional agricultural methods. Optical Brix technology measures the sweetness of each fruit, which gives the product its 17.5 name. The group identifies the ideal Brix level for oranges as 16-19, with 17.5 representing the most harmonious sweet-sour balance. An automated system measures each orange, rather than checking samples. Only 10% - 20% of the harvest meets the "Kim Cuong 17.5" standard. The "Bach Kim" line has a sweetness ranging from 13-19, depending on harvest time. Oranges not meeting these standards are used for juice production and are never labeled "17.5 oranges," which helps the brand maintain flavor and quality consistency in the market.

Additionally, Nongfu Spring standardizes 17.5 oranges through a "precision agriculture" model, moving away from subjective harvesting and sorting. In the orchards, workers harvest oranges only when they reach natural ripeness. They remove diseased or damaged fruits at the first stage. Upon entering the factory, each fruit undergoes three washes, filtering, and impurity removal before moving to a French-imported optical sorting line. The system takes about 40 photos of each orange to evaluate its color and surface quality.
During production, the factory line uses infrared rays to inspect internal quality without harming the oranges. An automatic weighing system sorts by weight, and individual packaging equipment is used, complemented by multiple layers of final manual checks. The packaging forms automatically, featuring anti-counterfeit and moisture-resistant properties, ensuring the product retains freshness until it reaches consumers.
In China, 17.5 oranges consistently hold the top sales position in the commercial orange segment. In 2023, sales for both the product and 17.5 orange juice reached 722 million USD. Many large supermarkets display the product separately, and it is popular among young consumers due to its transparency, clear traceability, and stable quality.
