On-site solar power helps cold storage facilities cope with rising energy costs

On-site solar power systems are becoming a solution for cold storage businesses to stabilize costs, reduce electricity price volatility risks, and enhance sustainable operations.

Over the past five years, commercial and industrial electricity prices in the US have increased by 8% to 25% depending on the region. The surge in AI and new energy demands are projected to keep electricity prices volatile. For the cold storage sector, an energy-intensive industry, rising and unpredictable costs are eroding profits. Prolonged heatwaves caused by climate change further intensify pressure, as cooling systems must operate continuously to preserve food and pharmaceuticals.

Cold storage facilities are impacted more significantly than many other sectors due to their 24/7 operation. Electricity for cooling can account for over 70% of total consumption, with usage around 640-650 kWh per cubic meter annually, which is four to five times higher than typical commercial buildings. Consequently, even slight fluctuations in electricity prices are enough to sharply increase operating costs.

In this context, on-site solar power serves as an effective "defense" solution. Generating electricity directly at the facility provides businesses with stable energy prices, reduces dependence on the grid, and mitigates the risk of price increases. Depending on the region, solar electricity costs range from 3.2 to 15.5 cents per kWh, often lower than the average commercial electricity price.

Given their characteristic high and stable year-round electricity consumption, many cold storage facilities can achieve financial efficiency even without government incentives. On-site solar power helps businesses lock in long-term energy costs, enabling proactive financial planning.

Integrating battery storage enhances benefits, allowing businesses to store surplus electricity during peak sun hours for use when demand or electricity prices rise, while also maintaining operations during power outages. Even systems without storage significantly reduce grid dependence.

Beyond cost factors, solar power also offers sustainability advantages. As customers, investors, and regulators increasingly prioritize carbon emissions, transitioning to clean energy helps cold storage businesses strengthen their image and boost competitiveness.

As electricity prices continue to escalate and grid stability declines, on-site solar power is becoming a practical choice, helping cold storage businesses protect profit margins and improve long-term operational capabilities.
