PepsiCo uses digital models to test factory improvements

PepsiCo is testing artificial intelligence and digital twin technology to simulate, validate, and optimize factory and warehouse operations before implementing changes.

According to a 6/1 statement, the consumer goods group launched an initial pilot program with AI chip company Nvidia and industrial technology group Siemens. This multi-year collaboration aims for a comprehensive restructuring of PepsiCo's manufacturing and supply chain operations.

"The scale and complexity of our operations, from farm to shelf, are vast," said Ramon Laguarta, Chairman and CEO of the group. "We are integrating AI across our operations to better meet the increasing demands of consumers and customers."

As part of its "digitalization-first" strategy, the company uses digital twins and AI agents as "co-designers" for factory and warehouse layouts. The company is implementing the Siemens Digital Twin Composer platform, built on Nvidia's Omniverse AI toolkit.

A digital twin is a real-time virtual model of a physical asset, system, or process. Major companies like Amazon and Walmart have already adopted this technology to simulate the impact of operational changes. PepsiCo stated it would first deploy simulations at US facilities, then expand globally, prioritizing major markets this year and in 2027.

"Together with Nvidia and Siemens, PepsiCo is re-architecting its operations, using high-fidelity digital twins and AI to innovate how it designs, optimizes, and operates global systems," commented Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.

According to the group, some US factories and warehouses have been converted into high-fidelity 3D models. These models help the company establish a performance baseline for factory operations and the end-to-end supply chain. The operations team uses digital twins to validate and optimize new configurations, aiming to increase capacity and production line throughput.

By accurately replicating individual machinery, conveyor belts, pallet routes, and personnel movement paths, the company can use AI agents to simulate, test, and refine its systems. The company stated it could detect up to 90% of potential design issues before implementing physical changes.

Published data indicates that applying digital twin and AI technologies helps PepsiCo improve production line throughput by up to 20%, achieve 100% design validation, and potentially reduce investment costs by up to 15%.

"With a unified, AI-powered digital platform, the company is moving towards a future where every factory and warehouse operates as an intelligent ecosystem," said Athina Kanioura, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer at PepsiCo. "Facilities will then not only respond to demand but also be able to forecast and adapt."
