US President Donald Trump announced on May 1 that he will increase import tariffs on automobiles and trucks from the European Union (EU) to the US next week. "Based on the fact that the EU is currently not complying with the Trade Agreement, next week, I will raise import tariffs on EU automobiles and trucks entering the US," US President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social on May 1.
In his post, President Trump also clarified that if the EU "produces automobiles and trucks at factories in the US, they will not be subject to import tariffs."
The US and the European Union (EU) reached a trade agreement in July 2025. This agreement set tariffs on European goods entering the US at 15%, with exceptions for products already subject to separate industry-specific duties, such as aluminum and steel. It also allowed for 0% tariffs on certain products, including aircraft and parts. Following this, the EU consented to remove import tariffs on various US goods and withdrew its threats of retaliatory tariffs.
