A series of Hanoi schools delay start times, switch to online learning due to heavy rain

Many schools switch to online teaching, delay class start times amid forecasts for prolonged heavy rain, risk of flooding and traffic jams, on the morning of 24/8.

Last night, Nguyen Tat Thanh Secondary and High School, Nang Khieu Secondary School, and Hanoi University of Education High School for the Gifted all announced a switch to online learning. The schools stated that, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, due to the impact of Typhoon Narra, Hanoi and many northern localities continue to experience heavy rain, with some areas receiving over 200 mm.

Several other schools also adjusted their schedules. Newton Secondary and High School shifted the start time of its first period from 7:45 to 8:00, also preparing for online teaching should weather conditions worsen. Similarly, Pascal Secondary School delayed class start until 8:30, prepared breakfast for all students, and arranged for teachers to be on duty until 18:00 (6:00 p.m.) to assist parents picking up children late.

At Doan Thi Diem Primary School and the Ngoi Sao Hoang Mai system, parents had flexibility. If their living area or commute was inconvenient, parents could keep their children at home. Ngoi Sao Hoang Mai School stated it would continue to teach and care for students who came to school. For students using the bus service, depending on the actual situation, the school would adjust routes and pick-up times, and inform families in advance.

At the university level, the Academy of Finance and Hanoi University of Finance and Banking also switched to online learning.

The aforementioned schools are primarily private institutions, which welcomed students back from early August. Meanwhile, most public schools had flexible start dates, with the earliest being 24/8, so parents and students were not affected.

Typhoon Narra was forecast to be in the waters east of Bach Long Vi, with winds of level 9, gusting to level 11 on the afternoon of 24/8. In recent days, rain and floods caused landslides and inundation at 735 traffic points: 700 in Lang Son, 33 in Bac Ninh, and two in Quang Ninh.
