In 2023, Nguyen Van Luu, from Ninh Binh, established the Lao Nong Vlog channel, driven by a desire to document his father's cooking. His father, Nguyen Van Phong, serves as the main character, directly preparing dishes and sharing his culinary experience. Luu handles the filming and editing, primarily using his phone. Initially focused on cuisine, the channel quickly expanded its content to include the family's garden, kitchen, local ingredients, and daily meals, capturing the essence of rural life in Northern Vietnam.
The channel has achieved significant recognition, notably with its video "Snails cooked with banana". This popular video documents Phong collecting snails from the field, preparing them, and then cooking them with green bananas and fermented rice, culminating in a family meal on a traditional bamboo bed. The video garnered over 1 million views on Facebook and TikTok, earning an honor at the Vietnam Digital Content Creation Awards 2024.

Lao Nong Vlog's unique appeal lies in the authentic blend of the father's extensive life and cooking experience with the son's production style. Luu mentioned that he personally edits and adds music, while Phong consistently upholds his traditional cooking methods and daily routines. This synergy creates content that feels genuine and relatable.
The videos frequently showcase familiar Northern Vietnamese dishes such as stir-fried freshwater shrimp with lime leaves, fried rice with crispy pork fat, needlefish cooked with fermented rice, stir-fried goby, rice noodle soup with snakehead fish, jute leaf crab soup, and snail and taro soup. Scenes depicting snail foraging, stove lighting, meal preparation, and family gatherings around the dining table are filmed within their intimate home setting. Many viewers express that Lao Nong's videos evoke nostalgia for their hometowns, families, and childhood meals, resonating deeply with cultural memories.
After three years of operation, Lao Nong has garnered nearly 1,8 million followers across various digital platforms, including over 1 million on Facebook and 786,000 on TikTok, underscoring its widespread popularity and impact.
