Victor Vu revealed that he has long harbored the idea of making a film about the spirit of Lam Son, even from the early days of his career. As a child, his parents gave him a comic book series about Vietnamese national heroes. Among the stories, the uprising that ended two decades of Ming domination and ushered in a new chapter under the Later Le Dynasty in Dai Viet history left a profound impression on him. As he pursued film studies, he dreamed of bringing the hero Le Loi's story to the big screen, but suitable conditions and a team were not available at the time.
Recently, he found a clear direction for the project, with the support of screenwriters ToTo Chan and Kim Li Bac. "We decided to tell the story of the Lam Son Uprising through cinematic language," the director stated. "The film will not only depict battles but also convey messages of patriotism, the desire for freedom, and the unwavering will of those who spent 10 years reclaiming their homeland."

Unlike his previous detective and historical fiction works such as "Tham tu Kien" and "Thien menh anh hung," "Chien Bao" is an epic historical drama. The film is set during the early stages of the uprising, portraying Le Loi as a young man from Thanh province, burdened by the loss of his country and seeking to reclaim freedom for his people. From the Lung Nhai oath, where 19 heroes first gathered, the Lam Son army achieved victory, ultimately forcing the Ming forces to withdraw after the Dong Quan oath in 1427.
Victor Vu and his collaborators spent over one year researching official sources, including Dai Viet su ky toan thu, Lam Son thuc luc, and foreign documents from that period, also gathering information from temples and steles. Professor - Tien si Tran Ngoc Them serves as the cultural and historical consultant for the project. The director explained that the film aims to portray emotional moments of "ordinary people achieving extraordinary feats," rather than attempting to recreate the entire war against the Ming.

In recent years, young domestic audiences have shown increased interest in historical films. Victor Vu noted that this is a positive sign, but it also creates pressure for the team, as many projects of the same genre are continually being released. "However, as a filmmaker, I prioritize the message and emotion above all, limiting market and box office influences," he affirmed.
The 51-year-old director is known for films such as "Co dau dai chien," "Thien menh anh hung," "Scandal," and "Qua tim mau." In 2015, "Toi thay hoa vang tren co xanh," an adaptation of Nguyen Nhat Anh's novel, became a box office phenomenon, earning Victor Vu the Best Director award for a feature film at the Vietnam Film Festival. In 2019, "Mat biec," an adaptation of the novel of the same name, grossed 180 billion Vietnamese dong, ranking among the top 5 highest-grossing Vietnamese films at the time and winning a Golden Lotus award in 2021. In 2023, he directed "Nguoi vo cuoi cung," starring Kaity Nguyen, which earned over 100 billion Vietnamese dong.
His period detective film "Tham tu Kien," released in late 4/2025, achieved nearly 250 billion Vietnamese dong, marking the highest grossing film of his career. Victor Vu and actress Dinh Ngoc Diep married in 2016 and have two sons, Landon Vu and Nolan Vu.
