On 12/8, Dr. Nguyen The Anh, Head of the Stroke Unit at Thanh Nhan Hospital, said the patient had been continuously using birth control pills for the past year and was obese.
The symptoms began two months prior, but the patient only sought medical attention when her condition deteriorated significantly. She was diagnosed with a cerebral infarction and narrowing of the carotid arteries on both sides.
"Transient neurological symptoms such as numbness, limb weakness, difficulty speaking, and blurred vision lasting a few minutes and then disappearing on their own are signs of a transient ischemic attack (TIA). These serve as early warning signs but are often ignored by patients," Dr. The Anh explained. Additionally, the patient had an undiagnosed congenital cerebrovascular condition.
The long-term use of birth control pills combined with obesity increased the risk of blood clots, leading to the stroke. After intensive treatment and rehabilitation, the patient's health has significantly improved, and she has been able to return to her studies. Doctors recommend regular check-ups and lifestyle adjustments, particularly weight loss, to prevent recurrence.
The estrogen component in birth control pills can trigger blood clotting by increasing levels of fibrinogen and prothrombin, factors that promote thrombus formation. Simultaneously, this hormone reduces protein S, a natural anticoagulant in the body.
Women under 35, especially those who smoke, are overweight, or have a history of blood clots or stroke, should be particularly cautious when using hormonal contraceptives. If considering long-term use of birth control pills, consult a specialist for a check-up, necessary tests, and advice on suitable methods.
If any unusual symptoms occur during medication use, such as progressively worsening headaches, pain increasing at night, unresponsiveness to common painkillers, seizures, or altered consciousness, patients should seek immediate medical attention. During the examination, providing complete information about the type of medication and duration of use is essential for accurate diagnosis.
