Inhaling secondhand smoke, suppressing coughs, not drinking enough water, and using products containing harmful chemicals can silently damage your lungs.

Exposure to secondhand smoke is linked to decreased lung function and an increased risk of respiratory infections. The harmful chemicals in smoke impair the lungs' ability to clear out harmful mucus, leading to buildup and infection. Smoke also damages the bronchial lining, increases phlegm production, and narrows the airways. This can lead to pneumonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer.

A sedentary lifestyle harms cardiovascular health and reduces lung efficiency. Everyone should incorporate exercises like pursed-lip breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, aerobic exercise, yoga, and walking into their routine. These exercises help increase lung capacity, improve gas exchange, and clear the airways.

Frequent slouching can compress the lungs, affecting respiratory function and reducing oxygen supply to the body. Sitting with a straight back and open shoulders allows the chest to fully expand during deep breaths. Sleeping on your left side with a pillow under your head helps the lungs function optimally and promotes blood circulation. This position is also beneficial for people who snore or have sleep apnea as it keeps the airways open.

Coughing is a natural reflex that protects the lungs by clearing the airways, removing irritants, and preventing infections. In some social situations, people may suppress coughs. However, doing this regularly can prevent the lungs from expelling mucus or irritants.

Drinking enough water helps thin the mucus lining, supporting airway clearance, keeping the lungs functioning effectively, and reducing the risk of infection. Dehydration thickens mucus, reducing its ability to remove irritants, making the lungs more susceptible to pathogens. For people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, adequate hydration makes it easier to cough up mucus, reducing the risk of complications.

Green tea is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. The theanine in tea helps boost immunity, fighting infections like colds and the flu. Drinks rich in vitamin C also strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and alleviate lung disease symptoms.

Cleaning products, disinfectants, air fresheners, and scented candles from unknown sources often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can irritate the respiratory tract and gradually reduce lung capacity.
