The kidneys play a vital role, filtering about half a cup of blood every minute to remove waste and excess water, which forms urine. They also perform other essential functions such as removing acid, maintaining the balance of water and minerals, and producing hormones. However, many people often neglect their kidney health.
Here are 7 warning signs of kidney damage to be aware of:
Foamy urine
One of the simplest signs of kidney damage is a change in urination. Urine may appear foamy, and there might be changes in frequency, color, and volume, sometimes with blood present.
Swelling
Individuals with kidney damage may experience swelling around the eyes because the kidneys leak a significant amount of protein into the urine. Additionally, impaired kidney function can lead to sodium buildup, causing swelling in the feet and ankles.
Fatigue
Decreased kidney function causes toxins and impurities to accumulate in the blood. It can also lead to anemia, reducing red blood cell count. Both conditions can cause fatigue, weakness, and lethargy.

Persistent itching
End-stage kidney disease is often accompanied by bone and joint disease, manifesting as dry, itchy skin. Dry skin results from shrinking sweat glands, while itching is due to the body attacking itself, causing inflammation and itching.
Bad breath
When kidney function declines, the blood isn't properly filtered, and waste products build up. This can cause food to taste different and lead to issues like bad breath.
Shortness of breath
Damaged kidneys can't process and excrete excess fluid, leading to fluid buildup in the lungs. Combined with anemia, this can cause shortness of breath.
Muscle cramps
Reduced kidney function causes an electrolyte imbalance. Low calcium levels and poorly controlled phosphorus levels can lead to muscle cramps.
