Maintaining a balanced diet and drinking enough water are sufficient for maintaining healthy kidney function, according to Dr. Neelam Vashisht, a nephrologist at Kolkata Hospital, India. However, there are some foods to be mindful of, as their consumption can contribute to the development of chronic kidney disease or worsen existing conditions:
Processed meats: Bacon, sausage, ham, and other processed meats are high in sodium and preservatives, such as nitrates, which are harmful to the kidneys. Dr. Vashisht explains that excess sodium increases blood pressure, a risk factor for kidney disease. Filtering excess sodium, along with all the added chemicals, also puts a toxic burden on the kidneys.
Canned soups and instant noodles: These meals are quick and easy, but they are often high in sodium and artificial flavorings. A single serving can contain more than half of your daily sodium requirement. Consuming too much sodium overloads the kidneys, leading to water retention, high blood pressure, and ultimately, kidney damage.
Sugary and carbonated drinks: Dark-colored colas often contain phosphorus additives, which can be harmful in high levels, especially if you have kidney problems. Moreover, sugary drinks contribute to obesity and insulin resistance, both of which can negatively impact kidney health.
Packaged chips and pickles: Salty snacks and preserved foods, including pickles, can increase sodium intake. "These make your kidneys work harder to remove the excess salt," says Dr. Vashisht. Over time, these foods can seriously damage the kidneys' delicate filters and impair their function.
Red meat: While protein is essential, too much red meat can overload the kidneys due to its high creatinine and uric acid content. A high protein intake increases the body's acid load, and the kidneys filter that acid before it can cause inflammation and scarring in the nephrons.

Artificial sweeteners: Although advertised as "healthy" sugar substitutes, artificial sweeteners like aspartame and saccharin can adversely affect kidney function with long-term consumption. Studies have shown that regular consumption may impair the kidneys' ability to filter waste products.
Frozen foods: Pre-packaged frozen foods are often high in sodium, unhealthy fats, and preservatives, which can cause harm by increasing blood pressure or oxidative stress. Frequently consuming these meals increases the risk of metabolic problems, which can impact kidney health.
Too much dairy: Milk provides calcium and protein, but excessive consumption can cause calcium overload and increase blood phosphorus levels. Over time, either of these can contribute to kidney stones or calcification in those with impaired kidney function.
