Blurred vision after pink eye: is it dangerous?

I've just recovered from pink eye, but my vision is blurry, like there's a film over my eyes. Is this dangerous, and how can it be treated? (Ngoc Lan, 32, Ho Chi Minh City)

Answer:

Pink eye (conjunctivitis) occurs when the conjunctiva is irritated due to infection (viral, bacterial) or allergies. The condition causes symptoms such as red eyes, itching, watery eyes, heavy discharge, eyelid pain, grittiness, and swelling. Pink eye typically begins in one eye and then spreads to the other, or it can occur in both eyes simultaneously. Other symptoms can include fatigue, low-grade fever, itchy throat causing coughing, and swollen lymph nodes behind the ears.

Usually, pink eye clears up within 7-14 days without treatment and without long-term complications. However, in some cases, depending on the cause of the conjunctivitis (viral, bacterial, or allergic), recovery can take varying amounts of time, potentially up to three weeks.

While pink eye can resolve on its own, in some cases, if not treated properly, it can cause serious complications like corneal inflammation or ulcers, infection spreading to the eyelids or tear ducts, and temporary or permanent vision loss. Patients with infection-induced conjunctivitis experiencing severe pain, light sensitivity, and significantly reduced vision should seek medical attention.

Blurred vision after pink eye, as you are experiencing, is relatively uncommon and may be due to corneal damage in the form of superficial punctate keratitis. This condition usually lasts only a few days and disappears on its own. However, you should see an ophthalmologist promptly for a diagnosis and timely treatment to limit more serious complications that could affect your vision.

If you have pink eye, keep your eyes clean, avoid rubbing them, eat a balanced diet, and avoid crowded places to prevent spreading the infection. Do not use corticosteroid eye drops without a doctor's prescription due to the risk of superinfection (infection with additional bacteria or viruses) and increased eye pressure.
