Does 'sleeping by day, working by night' harm the kidneys?

I have to work through the night. If I catch up on 7-9 hours of sleep the next day, will it still harm my health due to staying up late? (Truong, 33, Hanoi).

The notion of 'sleeping by day, working by night' or the habit of catching up on 7-9 hours of sleep the next day both harm health, especially the liver and kidneys.

The kidneys play vital roles in the body, such as filtering blood to eliminate toxins and excess water, and balancing electrolytes. The liver and kidneys detoxify the body from 10 PM, when the body is in a state of rest and sleep. If you stay up at night, these organs are forced to work continuously without rest. Moreover, staying up late disrupts the body's circadian rhythm, gradually weakening the body over time. At this point, even sleeping for 10 hours a day will not be effective.

Insufficient sleep also leads to mental fatigue, reduced memory and concentration, and an increased susceptibility to illness. For men, frequent night work can harm reproductive health, leading to erectile dysfunction, low libido, depression, and anxiety.

Therefore, it is advisable to maintain a healthy lifestyle, get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, ensure proper nutrition, and drink enough water. Limit alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and stimulants. Engage in daily physical activity to boost immunity.

In the evening, you should limit the use of stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco) that prolong wakefulness, and avoid overusing sleeping pills or sedatives. If you experience symptoms indicative of kidney disease, such as fatigue, paleness, poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, or urinary disorders, it is crucial to seek medical examination.
