During an examination at Tam Anh General Hospital TP HCM, Mr. Toan's prostate volume was approximately 80 ml, showing signs of obstructed urine flow. According to Dr. Nguyen Tan Cuong, Deputy Head of the Urology Department at the Urology - Nephrology - Andrology Center, patients with an enlarged prostate experiencing moderate to severe urinary symptoms that do not respond to medication require minimally invasive surgical intervention.
To prevent complications, Mr. Toan chose transurethral water vapor thermal therapy (Rezum). Dr. Cuong explained that the Rezum method is safe and minimally invasive, requiring no skin incision or surgical wound, and is performed via urethral endoscopy. Doctors inject water vapor into the hyperplastic prostate tissue, destroying the glandular cells. The prostate gradually shrinks over time, relieving pressure on the urethra and improving urine flow.

The procedure takes 15 minutes, reducing the risk of bleeding and infection. Patients avoid potential complications such as retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, or urinary incontinence after surgery, making it suitable for older individuals. Mr. Toan was discharged 24 hours after the intervention. Doctors advise patients to attend follow-up appointments as scheduled to monitor treatment effectiveness and assess changes in prostate volume.
Nocturia is one of the common symptoms of an enlarged prostate. As the prostate grows, the hyperplastic tissue can compress the urethra and bladder neck, causing obstructed urine flow. Patients experience difficult urination and frequently wake up to urinate multiple times during the night (two or more times), affecting their sleep and quality of life.
Doctors recommend that if nocturia persists for one to two weeks accompanied by other urinary disorders, men should seek early medical attention for timely diagnosis and treatment. An enlarged prostate can lead to numerous complications, including acute urinary retention, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and kidney damage, all of which can impact psychological well-being, quality of life, and sexual health.
