Obstetrician indicted for storing, distributing sensitive images of minor patients

A Taiwanese obstetrician has been indicted for allegedly exploiting his position to secretly film, store, and distribute sensitive images of numerous minor patients.

On 3/3, the prosecution officially transferred the case file of Dr. La to the New Taipei District Court. Prosecutors requested the most severe sentence under the Child and Adolescent Sexual Exploitation Prevention Act, CNA reported.

At the hearing, the suspect admitted to some of the offenses but steadfastly denied the accusation of distributing obscene videos. However, the judge assessed that La showed signs of exceptionally serious offenses, posing a risk of evidence destruction or collusion with witnesses. Consequently, the court ordered his continued detention and prohibited contact.

Previously, on 6/11/2025, police searched a large obstetrics and gynecology clinic system in Taoyuan city where La worked. Authorities seized about 1TB of sensitive child image data from the doctor's computer and personal hard drives. Police discovered La's act of storing obscene content while expanding an investigation into an illegal group network led by a suspect named Xie in Tainan.

Case files show La began illegally filming minor patients during his internship between 2016 and 2018. The doctor successfully carried out these actions, evading both clinic management and parents. By 2020, La joined numerous dark social media groups using keywords like "teen girls" and "children". He actively uploaded self-collected child sexual abuse images to shared notes, enabling other members to access them, indirectly facilitating widespread child sexual exploitation.

Representatives of the prosecution strongly condemned Dr. La's actions. They affirmed that the suspect severely trampled professional ethics and exploited patients' trust for personal gain. This cruel act undermines social order and directly inflicts physical and psychological damage on young victims that is difficult to heal.

A series of global cases where doctors exploit clinics to secretly film and sexually abuse patients are severely impacting medical ethics. Health experts believe these actions betray the Hippocratic Oath, where vulnerable individuals entrust their bodies and lives to professionals.

The world witnessed a similar case in 2018 when a US court sentenced sports doctor Larry Nassar to hundreds of years in prison. For two decades, he used the guise of injury treatment to commit depraved acts against more than 260 young female athletes. US sports authorities ignored the initial accusations, creating a perfect cover for the perpetrator to continue his spree for a long time.

Previously, in 2013, US police uncovered the case of gynecologist Nikita Levy, working at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital, who used a pen camera to secretly film thousands of female patients. Colleagues discovered suspicious equipment and immediately reported it to management, leading to the unraveling of the case. Levy chose to take his own life to evade justice immediately after police searched his home. Johns Hopkins Hospital later spent 190 million USD to settle lawsuits with more than 8,000 victims, creating one of the biggest media and legal disasters in US medical history.
