Video circulating on social media shows Lann standing next to officials when she suddenly stumbled, fell over the transparent podium, and collapsed, hitting her head on the floor. Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch rushed to her aid, quickly helping Lann onto her back. Other politicians and journalists also hurried to assist, surrounding Lann as she appeared unconscious.
Lann was escorted from the room but returned a few minutes later, explaining the incident as a result of low blood sugar. "Today has been an unusual Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have low blood sugar," she said.
It is unclear whether she sustained any injuries from the fall. A DN reporter stated, "It looked really bad. She fell right in front of me."
The press conference was canceled following the incident. Lann was appointed health minister after her predecessor, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, resigned on 8/9.
Low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, occurs when blood glucose levels fall below 70 mg/dL. Normal blood sugar levels before meals range from 90-130 mg/dL, between meals from 70-100 mg/dL, and should be below 180 mg/dL one to two hours after eating. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include anxiety, pale skin, rapid heartbeat, and sweating. More severe hypoglycemia can lead to blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, confusion, slurred speech, and drowsiness. Without prompt treatment, it can cause coma, seizures, and even death.
Individuals experiencing hypoglycemia should immediately consume the equivalent of 2-3 sugar cubes, 5-6 candies, sugary drinks, fruit, or honey. After 15 minutes, if blood sugar remains low, they should repeat the process until levels return to normal. After initial treatment with sugary food or drinks, if the condition doesn't stabilize, the individual should seek medical attention.
