The secret behind TikTok's viral 6-6-6 walking workout

The "6-6-6" walking method, a simple formula of 6 minutes of warm-up, 60 minutes of brisk walking, and 6 minutes of cool-down, is trending on TikTok.

This trend, reported by Fox News on 22/8, has garnered millions of views, with users sharing its effectiveness for weight loss without demanding workouts or lengthy gym sessions.

"Personally, I use walking as a way to reset," says American trainer Kollins Ezekh, adding that it helps clear his mind, reduce stress, and keep his body moving even on days without intense training.

Experts explain that brisk walking puts the body in "zone 2"—a low-to-moderate intensity training threshold with a heart rate of 60-70% of its maximum. You know you're walking briskly when your body feels warm, your breathing is heavier than usual, but you can still talk without gasping for air. This pace is typically around 5-7 km/hour or about 100 steps per minute. Smart wearables, step-tracking apps, or the "talk test" can help monitor pace and heart rate.

An hour of walking using the 6-6-6 method fulfills the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Research from the National Institutes of Health also shows that regular walking improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, and helps manage cholesterol.

The method's appeal lies in its accessibility—all it requires is a good pair of shoes and an hour. It's suitable for all ages, fitness levels, and schedules. Similar to the "12-3-30" treadmill trend, the workout emphasizes consistent effort over high intensity.

However, Ezekh cautions beginners against overexertion and stresses the importance of proper posture and footwear. "Posture and shoes are really important," he emphasizes. He also notes that walking alone doesn't meet all fitness needs—strength training and flexibility exercises are still essential.

"I see this trend as a starting point, not the finish line. Use it to build consistency, then add other exercises," advises Ezekh.
